Amazon vs Walmart Marketplace: where to expand, where to stay
Amazon is the default. Walmart is the meaningful second marketplace in the US - smaller, less competitive, but conversion mechanics differ. Worth adding when you have saturated Amazon and have inventory + ops to support a second platform.
| Amazon | Walmart Marketplace | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer volume | ~310M+ active US shoppers | ~150M+ unique monthly visitors |
| Average competition | High | Medium |
| Ad platform maturity | Very mature | Catching up - simpler tools |
| Typical conversion rate | 12-18% | 5-9% |
| Listing infrastructure | Heavy - A+ content, video, etc. | Lighter - faster to set up |
| Walled garden behaviour | Strong - hard to leave | Strong but newer |
Use Amazon when
Always for US D2C brands starting marketplace strategy.
Use Walmart Marketplace when
When Amazon is mature, the brand has US fulfillment capability, and you want incremental US revenue without going international.
Operator's verdict
If you are not yet on Amazon, start there. If Amazon is mature and at scale, Walmart is the cleanest second marketplace for US-focused brands. Skip it if the brand has stronger international optionality - go UK or UAE instead.
